UAE joins international maritime security coalition

WAM

The UAE has joined a US-led security alliance that aims to protect regional shipping routes.

According to national news agency WAM, the Emirates’ decision comes in support of global efforts to tackle threats to maritime navigation and trade.

The International Maritime Security Construct’s operations cover the Strait of Hormuz, Bab Al Mandab, the Sea of Oman and the Arabian Gulf.

Saudi Arabia joined the coalition on Wednesday, while Bahrain, Australia and the UK are the other members.

Salem Mohammed Al Zaabi, Director of the International Security Cooperation Department at the UAE’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation said the alliance will help "secure the flow of energy supplies to the global economy and contribute to the maintenance of international peace and security".
