Sharjah scientists study seagulls found on Sir Bu Nair Island

Researchers are conducting a scientific study on seagulls reportedly found on Sharjah’s Sir Bu Nair Island.

The seagulls first began nesting last month - laying hundreds of eggs and forming over 200 nests - and will continue until the end of the season.

The six-month research by the Environment and Protected Areas Authority, in cooperation with the Emirates Marine Environment Group, will look into the seabirds’ mating and reproduction patterns, as well as monitor their ability to adapt to the environment.

H.E. Hana Saif Al Suwaidi, Chairperson of the Environment and Protected Areas Authority said that the seagull, also called “Umm Sunnain”, is the largest seabird found on Sir Bu Nair Island.

A large group of these species in particular are registered in the eastern part of the reserve, indicating the reserve’s favorable environment that makes it an ideal home for several varieties of birds, animals and rare plants.
