An Australian freighter sunk by a Japanese submarine during World War II has been found after 77 years.

According to reports, a search team from the Australian National Maritime Museum located the shipwreck about 100km off Victoria.

Measuring about 100m long, the ship appears "relatively intact" about 700 meters below the ocean surface, scientists said.

The SS Iron Crown, which was hit by a torpedo in 1942, killed 38 of the 43 crew members. It sank within 60 seconds later in the Bass Strait.
