The eldest son of US President Donald Trump has won the right to hunt grizzly bears in northwestern Alaska through a lottery.

Donald Trump Jr. was one of three people who applied for 27 spots for non-resident hunters.

The state conducts periodic drawings for permits to hunt bears, caribou, moose and other animals.

"We get thousands of applications," a top official explained, adding that the winning is down to "pure chance, luck of the draw".

Trump Jr, who is scheduled to come to Alaska later this year, will now need to pay $1,000 non-resident tag fee to buy the $160 non-resident hunting licence.
