The congressional impeachment inquiry of US President Donald Trump is gaining momentum.

More than 300 former officials from security and foreign policy agencies have now endorsed the motion.

They include a former chief of the National Counterterrorism Center and a deputy secretary of state.

Earlier this week House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced she would launch the inquiry.

It comes after it emerged that Trump had asked Ukraine's president to investigate former Vice President and potential 2020 presidential election rival Joe Biden.

The US President allegedly did this while holding off aid to Ukraine.
