There's no threat of tsunami after a 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck off Russia's Kuril Islands.

US authorities cancelled an earlier warning for the country's West Coast, Alaska and Canada's British Columbia, while the meteorological authorities in Japan maintained there's no threat.

Some of the US coastal areas may experience tidal changes that are non-damaging, they added.

According to the US Geological Survey (USGC), the quake struck 219 km south-southeast of Severo on the Kuril chain north of Japan at a depth of 56 km.

The USGS also revised an initial reading from 7.8 to 7.5 on the Richter Scale.

There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.
