The lower house of Indian parliament on Wednesday voted in favour of an atomic energy bill that will allow private participation in the country's nuclear power sector.

The legislation paves the way for a major shift from the existing system where state-run Nuclear Power Corporation of India has a monopoly over the sector.

It will also allow foreign firms to partner Indian companies and seek licences to set up nuclear power plants.

The bill, called the Sustainable Harnessing of Advancement of Nuclear Energy for Transforming India Bill, 2025, will need approval of the upper house to become law.
