The man who killed a woman after driving his car in to a crowd of protesters in Charlottesville has been sentenced to life in prison.

22-year-old James Alex Fields apologised for his actions as the verdict was passed.

He was sentenced for several federal hate crimes for the August 2017 attack.

Heather Heyer died when Fields rammed his vehicle into a large group of people protesting against a white nationalist rally.

Fields, who has publicly declared that he is a neo-Nazi, was also convicted of murder at the state level.
