India's Supreme Court has ordered mediation in the Ayodhya land dispute.
A three-member panel has been appointed, and the mediation process will be monitored by the court.
For decades, Hindu and Muslim groups have been trying to seek control of the site and the right to offer prayers there.
In 1992 a 16th-century mosque on the site was destroyed by a mob, leading to riots in which thousands of people were killed.
