The Russian had to withdraw from the Rogers Cup earlier this month due to a leg injury, meaning she hasn’t played since Wimbledon, where she lost to Serena Williams in the semi-final. “Unfortunately I will not be able to compete in this year’s US Open,” Sharapova said in a Twitter posting. “I have done everything possible to be ready but it was just not enough time. “To all my amazing fans, I will be back in the Asian swing in a few weeks and look forward to finishing the year healthy and strong.” It’s the second time in three years that Sharapova has had to withdraw from the tournament, which she won in 2006.
