FIFA seeks millions in compensation from ex-officials for damaging its reputation

FIFA has applied for millions of dollars in compensation from ex-officials in the US who were involved in the sport’s biggest graft scandal. Football’s governing body said it was for the damage done to its reputation and business interests. It’s also seeking repayment of salaries and a full audit of a former top official, who it says has continued to live an extravagant lifestyle while on bail from a New York court. Former officials who have pleaded guilty have already agreed to pay more than $190 million (AED 670 million) in forfeiture, US authorities have confirmed. A total of 42 sports officials, executives and corporate entities were named and charged in the US under the country’s bribery and money laundering laws. Last month, Gianni Infantino was elected president, succeeding Sepp Blatter, who was banned for his involvement in the corruption scandal.
