The University of Sharjah and Sweden's Linkoping University are working together to research the movement of unmanned aircraft within cities.
The research was conducted over three years, with inputs from several specialized companies in the UAE, and Sweden's Civil Aviation Administration.
An initial report was released during a presentation at the Sweden pavilion at EXPO 2020 Dubai.
A joint cooperation agreement, called 'Triple Helix', was signed between the two universities that could potentially see governments and institutions adopt the findings of the research.
A 'Triple Helix' is a model of innovation that knowledge-based economies adopt. It involves a set of interactions between academic institutions (universities), specialized industry entities, and government bodies.
This will benefit modern, digitally-powered cities looking to implement a management system for civil aviation traffic as drone and unmanned aircraft continue to multiply.
This initiative also ties in with the UAE's 'Fourth Industrial Revolution' that seeks to integrate Artificial Intelligence, Blockchain, and other smart systems across the local industry.
