UAE seeks to strengthen Francophone relations

The UAE is making steady strides towards strengthening its relations with French-speaking countries, Dr. Salem Al Neyadi, UAE Ambassador to the International Organisation of La Francophonie (OIF), affirmed at the 19th Francophone Summit in Paris.

“The UAE’s accession to the International Organisation of La Francophonie was a strategic step aimed at expanding the horizons of cooperation with French-speaking countries, as the country seeks to develop strong relations in the cultural and linguistic fields, to the benefit of all parties,” Dr. Al Neyadi said.

The UAE gained observer status in the organisation in 2010 and became an "associate member" in 2018. 

Speaking about the importance of cultural exchange, he pointed out that cultural diplomacy plays a pivotal role in the UAE’s strategy to enhance its international presence, explaining that the UAE’s participation in the summit was a new step towards strengthening cultural and diplomatic relations with the organisation’s countries, as the country seeks to present a model to be emulated in coexistence and cultural diversity .

“Language and culture are two essential elements in building sustainable relations with other countries. In this context, the UAE supports many initiatives that promote the teaching of the French language within the country, and we also encourage cultural exchange between Emirati and Francophone educational and cultural institutions,” Dr. Al Neyadi said. 

The Ambassador praised the UAE's participation in the 19th edition of the summit, saying it was an excellent opportunity to enhance the UAE's position on the world stage and exchange visions with member states. 

He added the UAE will continue to strengthen its relations with Francophone countries through its active participation in international organisations and its support for cultural and linguistic initiatives .

The International Organization of La Francophonie now comprises 54 full members, seven associate members and 27 observer members. It is one of the most influential global linguistic and cultural groups, spanning all five continents and encompassing over 320 million French speakers.

The UAE has more than 300,000 French-speaking nationals residing in the country.
