UAE calls for immediate Sudan ceasefire, expansion of arms embargo

WAM

The UAE has emphasised that there is no military solution to the conflict in Sudan, calling instead for an immediate ceasefire and urgent humanitarian truce amid escalating violence in and around El Obeid.

The statement was delivered during an urgent session of the UN Human Rights Council focused on the situation in the city.

The UAE also strongly condemned violations of international law by both sides in the conflict, including attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure.

It called for the expansion of the UN arms embargo to cover the whole of Sudan, saying this is necessary to help stop the fighting and protect civilians, and urged safe and unhindered humanitarian access across affected areas.

As part of the Sudan Quad, the UAE welcomed the outcomes of the Berlin Conference and international efforts to advance a civilian-led political process.

It added that any lasting solution must be driven by civilians and reflect the aspirations of the Sudanese people, independent of both warring parties and extremist groups.
