UAE, Belgium hold third round of political consultations in Abu Dhabi

WAM

The UAE and Belgium held the third round of political consultations in Abu Dhabi, exploring avenues to further expand non-oil trade, foster private sector partnerships and enhance investment in key sectors like energy and advanced tech.

The talks, hosted by the UAE's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, was co-chaired by Reem Ketait, Deputy Assistant Minister for Political Affairs, and Theodora Gentzis, head of Belgium's federal foreign affairs department.

The two sides reviewed the depth and growth of bilateral relations and discussed judicial and consular cooperation.

A decision to further strengthen collaboration in legal affairs and law enforcement coordination to counter terrorism and extremism and enhance maritime security was also agreed upon.

They noted the steady growth in bilateral trade over recent years, with special focus on the growth of Belgian companies operating in the UAE across logistics, energy, advanced manufacturing, ports, life sciences and innovation sectors.

Both sides also exchanged views on developments in the Middle East, European security, and the Horn of Africa, and underscored the urgent need for de-escalation, protection of civilians, and the need for dialogue to prevent regional instability. They also emphasised the importance of ensuring unhindered humanitarian aid access to conflict zones and reaffirmed their shared commitment to peace-building.

The UAE–EU Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), which is currently under negotiation, was also on the agenda.

The next round of political consultations will be held in Brussels in 2027.
