UAE and Ethiopia reaffirm strategic partnership during high-level talks

The United Arab Emirates and Ethiopia have reaffirmed their strategic partnership during high-level talks focused on regional security, humanitarian crises and global cooperation.

The discussions took place on January 6 during a working visit by Sheikh Shakhboot bin Nahyan Al Nahyan to Ethiopia. Both sides said the relationship between the two countries is built on long-standing cooperation, mutual respect and shared economic and security interests.

According to officials, the talks reviewed developments affecting peace and stability in the region, with both countries stressing their commitment to promoting security and lasting peace.

Focus on Sudan and humanitarian access

A key part of the discussions centred on the conflict in Sudan. The UAE and Ethiopia condemned attacks on civilians and humanitarian workers, calling on all warring parties to ensure their protection.

Both sides said responsibility for ending the conflict lies with the parties involved and renewed calls for an immediate humanitarian truce, leading to a permanent ceasefire. They also urged rapid and unhindered humanitarian access and an inclusive political transition towards a civilian-led government.

The talks recalled the High-Level Humanitarian Conference for the People of Sudan, co-hosted by the UAE, Ethiopia, IGAD and the African Union on the margins of the AU Summit in February 2025, which mobilised international support for Sudan’s humanitarian needs.

Climate and global priorities

Beyond regional security, the two sides discussed global priorities, including climate action. The UAE welcomed Ethiopia’s preparations to host COP32 and said it was ready to work closely with the Ethiopian presidency.

Officials agreed to build on the outcomes of COP28, held in the UAE, including the UAE Consensus, which they described as a strong foundation for advancing global climate goals.

The talks also highlighted the upcoming UN Water Conference 2026, to be co-hosted by the UAE and Senegal later this year. Both sides acknowledged the UAE’s role in advancing water technology and innovation and explored opportunities for cooperation in sustainable water solutions.

Strengthening long-term cooperation

At the close of the meeting, both countries underlined their shared commitment to addressing challenges that threaten regional stability and to strengthening their long-standing partnership.

They said continued cooperation would remain essential in promoting peace, supporting humanitarian efforts and advancing shared priorities on the global stage.
