Dubai strengthens living standards in workers’ communities

Dubai Municipality has completed a package of strategic projects aimed at improving living conditions, quality of life and sustainability across workers’ communities in the emirate.

The projects were delivered in coordination with government partners and support the city’s Workers’ Accommodation Policy.

The work includes infrastructure upgrades, improvements to buildings and new community and recreational facilities, with the aim of creating safer and more sustainable communities for workers.

A key achievement is the launch of a comprehensive shared database of workers’ areas, providing government entities with accurate data, performance indicators and planning tools to guide future development.

Dubai Municipality has also introduced a unified smart classification system for workers’ accommodation and completed inspections of 1,417 buildings to assess structural integrity and compliance with health and safety standards.

Under the Model Workers’ Accommodation initiative, 19 facilities were recognised for meeting enhanced standards, including three Platinum-rated accommodations, nine Gold-rated and seven Silver-rated sites.

Field surveys have also been carried out to assess infrastructure in workers’ areas, including the need for pedestrian pathways, bridges and pavements.

The Municipality says these improvements are now being addressed according to priority, alongside efforts to develop better parking solutions.

Planning and design standards for workers’ accommodation have also been updated.

The new standards set a minimum sleeping area of 3.7 square metres per person, while the overall floor area allocation ranges from 8.9 to 10.3 square metres per person.

They also require dedicated recreational facilities and outdoor spaces.

Dubai Municipality says its approach is based on data and forward planning, supporting the objectives of the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan and the Dubai Quality of Life Strategy 2033.

The wider programme also includes new retail outlets, community facilities and sports amenities, giving workers greater access to shopping, recreation and physical activity within their communities.

The overall goal is to create safe, well-planned and people-centred residential environments that support workers’ health, wellbeing and quality of life.
