A special trolley with a robotic arm and a payment scanning system has been developed by students at Abu Dhabi University (ADU) for People of Determination.
Known as the "D1Cart," the device aims to make a trip to the store into an easier, safer and faster experience.
Along with the support of Abu Dhabi University’s Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (ORSP), and Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Center (ADNEC), Electrical and Computer Engineering students at ADU worked together on the project.
D1Cart is supported by a robotic arm and a lifting mechanism controlled by a remote joystick to help people of determination reach items on high shelves effortlessly.
The control system's speed and sensitivity can be adjusted by simple manual controls.
D1Cart also features an automated scanning system to provide comfort and convenience so users do not have to queue at the tills.
This helps to limit interaction with store staff and shoppers, which in turn contributes to the precautionary measures to avoid transmission of the COVID-19 virus.
