2 killed, 11 injured in multiple Dubai accidents

Two people were killed and 11 others were injured in separate accidents on Dubai's roads over the weekend.

Dubai Police said distracted driving, sudden swerving and failure to maintain a safe distance were the main causes.

The two deaths were reported in a crash that occurred on Al Ibdaa Street (behind Crowne Plaza Hotel) on Saturday when a driver rammed into another vehicle after failing to check if the road was clear before making a U-Turn.

Four others were severely inured in the same accident.

The other accidents took place on Emirates Road, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, Al Khail Road, JVC and Sheikh Zayed Road.

Colonel Jumaa Salem bin Suwaidan, Acting Director of the General Directorate of Traffic at Dubai Police, said the accidents could have been avoided if the motorists had complied with the traffic rules.

Details of accidents

The first accident occurred on Friday on Emirates Road over the Dubai Club Bridge in the Sharjah-bound direction when a lorry driver swerved off the lane and lost control, causing the vehicle to flip over in the middle of the road.

Two individuals sustained injuries in the accident.

The second accident happened last Saturday between a motorcycle and a light vehicle on Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road near Dubai-Al Ain Bridge, Abu Dhabi-bound.

The collision, which left the motorcyclist with mild injuries, took place due to the lack of a safe distance between the two vehicles.

Col. bin Suwaidan said the third accident was also reported on Saturday.

It occurred on Al Khail Road, Abu Dhabi-bound, near the Business Bay exit when a motorist dozed off and lost control of his vehicle before it flipped over in the middle of the road.

In the fourth accident, which took place in the JVC area, a pedestrian sustained serious injuries when he was run over by a motorist who suddenly swerved to the right of the road in a bid to avoid colliding with another vehicle on Qumasha street.

Another accident occurred on Saturday evening on Sheikh Zayed Road, in which a woman sustained moderate injuries when her vehicle flipped over following a sudden swerve.

Col. bin Suwaidan also added that the failure to maintain a safe distance led to a severe collision between a lorry and a pickup truck on Emirates Road before Al Faya Bridge, in which one person was injured.
