The number of deaths linked to the novel coronavirus touched the 100,000 mark on Friday, three months after the first fatality was reported in the Chinese city of Wuhan.

While it took 83 days for the toll to cross 50,000, it took only eight more for it to spike to 100,000.

It comes as the number of positive cases globally crossed 1.6 million, with infections reported in more than 210 countries and territories.

The novel coronavirus first emerged in Wuhan late last year, and is linked to a market selling wild animals.
