India's top court on Wednesday rejected the final appeal of one of four men convicted in the 2012 gangrape and murder of a medical student in Delhi.

The court said it found no reason to review the sentence.

Akshay Kumar Singh had filed his petition earlier this month after the other three had theirs rejected.

He had earlier sought clemency arguing that life in Delhi is becoming short due to rising air and water pollution.

The gruesome crime committed by the four men inside a moving bus in the national capital had triggered shockwaves across India and abroad, and prompted authorities to tighten laws around sexual violence.

The victim's mother welcomed the ruling. "This is one step closer to justice," she said.
