The death toll in an attack at a police compound in northwest Pakistan has reached 31, AFP reported on Saturday, citing a police official.

The attacker rammed an explosives-laden car into the Old Police Lines complex at Kohat on Friday as officers and their families were praying in a mosque.

"At least 31 people, including 16 police personnel, have been killed and more than 100 injured so far in the militant attack," an official said.

Kohat is a town of around 220,000 people in Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province.

Local militant group Ittehad-ul-Mujahideen Pakistan, a faction linked to Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, has claimed responsibility for the attack.
