It's seen as the biggest snapshot into how the labour market in the United States is performing and it's a piece of data that the Federal Reserve also keeps strict tabs on. Investors are closely watching the report for clues to when the Fed might next raise interest rates. A strong labour market would also ease fears that the US economy is heading into recession.
