The final in Sydney went down to the deciding doubles rubber after the two nations split the singles matches.
Novak Djokovic teamed with Viktor Troicki to beat Pablo Carreno Busta/Feliciano Lopez 6-3, 6-4.
Roberto Bautista Agut had initially given Spain a 1-0 lead after registering a 7-5, 6-1 win over Dusan Lajovic.
However, Djokovic forced the doubles after beating World No. 1 Rafael Nadal 6-2, 7-6.
