UAE midday break for outdoor workers returns from June 15

The UAE's Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation has announced the return of its Occupational Heat Stress Prevention Policy for the 22nd consecutive year.

The policy, commonly known as the midday break, will be in effect from June 15 to September 15, prohibiting outdoor work under direct sunlight and in open areas between 12:30 PM and 3:00 PM each day.

The Ministry said that private sector companies have consistently achieved compliance rates of more than 99 per cent in recent years, while also introducing initiatives to support workers.

Certain activities will be exempt from the ban where work must continue for technical or public safety reasons.

These include asphalt laying, concrete pouring, emergency repairs to water and electricity services, traffic-related works, and projects that require special permits from government authorities.

Employers are required to provide shaded rest areas, cooling equipment such as fans, adequate drinking water, hydration supplements, and first-aid facilities for workers, particularly those involved in exempted activities.

The Ministry will monitor compliance through its smart inspection systems, field visits and awareness campaigns throughout the summer period.
