Sharjah has started work on a township for the underprivileged in the Philippines and opened an orphanage in Mindanao Island, as the Emirate steps up efforts to help communities in need.
His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Ahmed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and Chairman of the Sharjah Media Council, said the move is deeply rooted in the values of goodness, compassion, and humanity that the UAE stands for.
With the foundation stone for the Al Reeh Al Mursala Village laid, Sheikh Sultan thanked the donors who contributed through the Sharjah TV and Radio's 'Al Reeh Al Mursala' programme.
Sheikh Dr Sultan reviewed the designs for the village that will have 60 homes, each with two bedrooms and a living room. It will also include an artesian well that will supply clean drinking water and a vocational centre for the residents.
He also inaugurated the Dar Al Rahma Orphanage in the island of Mindanao. The facility can house 50 orphans, and is equipped with multipurpose classrooms and a computer laboratory. It also features a mosque, an electric-powered well, shops and restaurants.
A sewing institute has also been set up nearby to provide opportunities for mothers of orphans to build an income of their own.
