Dubai-based Emirates and flydubai have updated their COVID-19 protocols regarding the wearing of face masks on board.
The move comes following the UAE government's decision to drop mask mandates in most indoor public places from September 28.
In a statement on its website, Emirates Airline said wearing a face mask is optional in the UAE and on its flights.
However, for passengers travelling from or transiting through Dubai, the mask rules of their destination will apply throughout the journey.
Flydubai has also made mask wearing optional for passengers travelling to Dubai.
The airline's spokesperson told ARN News that its protocols have been updated following the directives issued by the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority (DCAA).
"Effective from 28 September 2022, face masks will be optional for passengers travelling to Dubai. Passengers travelling from or transiting through Dubai will be requested to wear a face mask if it is required at their final destination," the airline added.
