Dubai Reef, the world’s largest purpose-built reef development, has achieved a significant milestone with the fabrication of its first 1,000 reef modules.
This project aims to enhance marine biodiversity and promote ecological sustainability in the emirate's waters.
Launched by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and the UAE's Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister, the Dubai Reef project will deploy a total of 20,000 reef modules over three years.
The pilot phase began in April 2024, and deployment of the initial modules is set to start in the last week of November.
The reef modules will be installed at varying depths across four clusters, creating diverse habitats for fish species and marine life.
Ranging from 1.6 to 6.5 metres in height and placed at depths of 15 to 25 metres, these modules will foster vibrant ecosystems for reef fish, corals, sea anemones, sponges, and molluscs.
Construction of the reef modules began in August 2024, utilizing sustainable materials on a biofuel-powered site. This ensures durability and supports marine life while adhering to eco-friendly practices.
Ahmed Mohammed bin Thani, Director General of Dubai Environment & Climate Change Authority (DECCA), highlighted the successful fabrication as a major achievement, emphasizing the project’s potential for collaboration and innovation.
Spanning 600 sq.km., Dubai Reef is the second major project under the Dubai Can sustainability initiative, supporting the ambitious goals of the Dubai Economic Agenda, D33, to position Dubai as a leading global hub for business and leisure.
